Aareschlucht — The Gorge That Took Our Breath Away

A stunning natural gorge carved by the Aare river through the Swiss Alps near Meiringen — one of the most dramatic walks we have ever done.

The Aareschlucht is a narrow gorge carved by the Aare river over thousands of years in the Swiss Alps near Meiringen. Walking through it feels like stepping into another world — the turquoise water roars beneath narrow walkways bolted into the cliff face, and the rock walls rise up to 200 metres on either side.

We visited in late June when the water was at its most brilliant turquoise. The walk takes about 45 minutes from one end to the other, and there is a train that brings you back to the start. The eastern entrance near Meiringen is the more dramatic entry point.

What makes this place truly special is how the light changes throughout the gorge. In some sections it narrows to just a few metres wide, the sky disappearing entirely above you. The sound of rushing water echoes off every surface.

One of the most dramatic walks in Switzerland. The turquoise water, the sheer rock walls — it genuinely takes your breath away. Go early morning in summer.
