The Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba stands at the entrance to Monastir's medina, its golden dome visible from across the city. Built in 1963 and expanded after Bourguiba's death in 2000, it combines Islamic architectural traditions with a modern grandeur that reflects the man's ambitions for his country.
The interior is lavishly decorated with Italian marble, Venetian chandeliers and intricate tilework. Bourguiba's remains and those of his family rest in the central chamber.
