Our second visit was decided to take place in one of the saddest cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, perhaps even in Europe - Srebrenica. We were all aware of the terrible events that took place there. Like every morning, we started the day by enjoying coffee and planning the day, and it was the same on this day. We got up around 08:00, made coffee and breakfast together, and slowly enjoyed the morning hours of this beautiful day.
Was this really supposed to happen?
After having coffee and breakfast, we decided to prepare ourselves and slowly set off towards Srebrenica. According to the navigation, we had about 2 hours of driving ahead, but that didn't dampen our spirits because we enjoy driving together. After 2 hours of driving, we were greeted by 6,600 tombstones in the desolate Potocari Memorial Center, out of a total of 8,372 victims, and currently, around 6,600 are buried there. We paused there for a while, wondering why? Why did this have to happen? Was this really supposed to happen? What had these people done wrong to someone? The most heart-wrenching scene was when we saw the grave of one man and his 5 sons buried beside him.
Srebrenica Museum
After visiting Potocari, we continued our journey to the Srebrenica Museum. There, we were greeted by a guide who explained each part of the museum and told us about each room. Watching the movie "Quo Vadis, Aida" before visiting the museum proved to be helpful, as it allowed us to better understand some scenes from the movie that books or other films couldn't portray. We wholeheartedly recommend the film to anyone who hasn't watched it, as it opens one's eyes to some stories that we otherwise wouldn't fully grasp just by reading or watching other sources.
Srebrenica is a symbol of tragic events
After visiting the museum, we continued our journey to "Guber Srebrenica," but we will write more about that in another article. However, for now, we focus on what happened in Srebrenica in 1995 and how important it is for everyone to visit this place. It is a journey that will change you, touch your heart, and awaken awareness of the importance of peace and reconciliation among people. Srebrenica is a symbol of tragic events, but it is also a symbol of the strength of the human spirit and the hope that tragedies like this will never happen again.
