Zurich is Switzerland's best-connected city. From Zurich Hauptbahnhof, you can reach some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe in under two hours by train. Every trip on this list we've done ourselves, multiple times.

1. Lucerne — 50min by train (CHF 24)

The most beautiful city in Switzerland. The 14th-century Chapel Bridge, turquoise Lake Lucerne, and snow-capped peaks rising directly behind the town. Mt. Pilatus cable car (CHF 72, 50% off with Swiss Travel Pass) on the world's steepest cogwheel railway. Lake boat fully included with Swiss Travel Pass. Arrive before 9am to beat the crowds.

2. Rhine Falls, Schaffhausen — 40min by train

Europe's largest waterfall — 150m wide, 23m high. Stand at the viewing platforms with spray in your face. Boat trip to the rock in the middle (CHF 8–12). Best in May-June when snowmelt makes it most powerful. Combine with Schaffhausen old town (well-preserved medieval buildings).

3. Stein am Rhein — 55min by train

One of the most extraordinary main squares in Europe — every building decorated with detailed Renaissance frescoes. Completely free to walk around. Very small (2–3 hours is enough). Combine with Rhine Falls for a full day.

4. Interlaken — 2h by train (CHF 60)

Jungfraujoch railway (CHF 145–229, 25% off Swiss Pass) reaches 3,454m. Harder Kulm funicular (CHF 34, 50% off). Lauterbrunnen valley with 72 waterfalls 20min from Interlaken. Take the first train from Zurich (~7am) to make the most of the day.

5. Appenzell — 1h20 by train

Where Switzerland feels most traditional — painted wooden houses, cowbells, the world's oldest direct democracy. Appenzeller cheese tasting (free to try in dairy). Ebenalp cable car (CHF 28) to the cliff-face Äscher guesthouse — one of the most photographed spots in Switzerland.

6. Konstanz, Germany — 1h by train

The largest city on Lake Constance, technically in Germany but deeply connected to Switzerland. Prices noticeably lower in Euros. Beautiful medieval old town preserved because the city left lights on at night during WWII to appear continuous with neutral Switzerland. Lake Constance swimming in summer.

7. Bern — 55min by train

Switzerland's capital and most underrated major city. 6km of covered medieval arcades (Lauben) — one of the longest in the world. Bern Bear Park free. Rose Garden with panoramic views over the Aare river loop. Einstein Museum excellent. Farmers market Saturday mornings on Bundesplatz.
