Geneva is one of Europe's most perfectly positioned cities for day trips. Within two hours in any direction you can reach some of the continent's most breathtaking destinations. We live near Geneva and have done every trip on this list — some many times over.

1. Chamonix, France — 1h15 by car

The crown jewel. At the foot of Mont Blanc (4,808m), Chamonix delivers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on earth. The Aiguille du Midi cable car (€65–75) takes you to 3,842m for 360° views. Mer de Glace glacier train (€38). Check the weather webcam before going — clouds ruin the experience.

2. Annecy, France — 45min by car

The most photogenic city in France. Medieval old town with turquoise canals, one of Europe's cleanest lakes, excellent cycling around the lake (bike rental €15–20/half day). Market on Tuesday, Friday, Sunday mornings. Arrive before 10am in summer to beat crowds.

3. Interlaken, Switzerland — 2h15 by train

Adventure capital of Switzerland. Jungfraujoch railway (CHF 145–229) reaches 3,454m through tunnels carved inside the Eiger. Harder Kulm funicular (CHF 34) for panoramic views over two lakes. Paragliding tandem flights (CHF 160–180). Lauterbrunnen valley with 72 waterfalls — free to visit.

4. Gruyères, Switzerland — 1h10 by car

Medieval village that seems too perfect to be real. Château de Gruyères (CHF 12), La Maison du Gruyère cheese dairy (CHF 7, watch making 9–11am), HR Giger Alien artist museum (CHF 12.50). Don't leave without trying the double cream meringue.

5. Lausanne, Switzerland — 45min by train (CHF 22)

World capital of the Olympic movement. Olympic Museum (CHF 20), Gothic cathedral with nightwatch tradition, Ouchy lakeside promenade free. Restaurants 20–30% cheaper than Geneva.

6. Yvoire, France — 40min by car

14th century village on Lake Geneva, Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Village entry free. Jardin des Cinq Sens (€11). Ferry to Nyon in Switzerland. Visit before 10am — extremely crowded by midday in summer.

7. Montreux, Switzerland — 1h by train

Château de Chillon (CHF 14.50) sitting on a rocky island in the lake — 14 centuries of history inside. 10km lakeside promenade with Freddie Mercury statue. Best lakeside Christmas market in Switzerland in December.
